In a photo by Stanisław Markowski, a man wearing a gas mask looks down a street in Nowa Huta, Kraków, on a clash between protesters and police during the declaration of martial law in Poland. Due to frequent use of tear gas by ZOMO (the Polish riot police), many civilians took to wearing gas masks on their way to work.
On the same day of this photograph, ZOMO killed Ryszard Smaugr. In another Polish city, two others were killed.
